Terre Haute, Ind. – Vigo County had an opportunity to boast about the positive momentum during Thursday’s annual Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce County Update. Vigo County Commissioners Mark Clinkenbeard, Mike Morris and Chris Switzer gave a presentation on the multifaceted approach Vigo County and See You In Terre Haute Community Plan are putting behind the concerted effort.
When prompted about what makes him proud to represent Vigo County, Commissioner Switzer said “Seeing all of you here.” He said, noting those in attendance. Switzer then asked new Vigo County School Corporation Superintendent Chris Himsel to stand which received an ovation from the crowd. “Everyone here supports you,” Switzer said to Himsel.
Workforce development and increasing housing stock remain top priorities for the Commissioners. These issues require long-term planning to provide a roadmap for future projects and priorities to ensure that things continue to progress.
Outsiders are taking notice of the improvements and investment in Vigo County. Improving community pride and perception from local residents is very important. There are many improving aspects of the community that both the Chamber and the commissioners will continue to boast about to make sure the county is putting its best foot forward when it comes to attracting and retaining a talented workforce.
Tourism in Terre Haute is booming and growing. Last year, the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau collected $2,842,000 in Innkeeper’s Tax, an all-time record. The Commissioners believe that tourism will continue to be a staple of our local economy for years to come.
Vigo County will pave about 44 miles of road in 2023 and also plans to replace 19 Culverts over the next two years. This continued effort will come at a higher cost than previous years, with the average price per mile being raised around $97,000.
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds are also planned to be put to good use. The local ARPA Team has identified funding buckets including housing, public safety, parks, small business assistance, child care, food deserts and more.
“Since the inception of the See You in Terre Haute Community Plan, we have seen a great deal of progress for Terre Haute, Vigo County and West Central Indiana,” stated Kristin Craig, Executive Director, Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce. “While the Chamber is proud to lead this effort, having a productive relationship with community leaders like the Vigo County Commissioners and Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett is key to achieving our goals.”
The County Update saw the largest crowd since its inception. Over a hundred people from different industries and organizations gathered at the Terre Haute Convention Center for the annual event.
